Book Club Discussion: "Into the Water" by Paula Hawkins

Book Club Discussion: "Into the Water" by Paula Hawkins

Hello and Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a great weekend - I know I did!

I spent a lot of time with friends and family, which is always a big bonus. I helped my brother and his fiancée start their baby registry (and I may have purchased some adorable baby clothes) in anticipation of the birth of my soon-to-be niece or nephew. I cannot wait to meet this little angel! (SO EXCITED!!!)

I also did some night-kayaking, which is quickly turning into one of my favorite activities. It’s such a serene and peaceful experience! Have you tried it? With the proper gear (lights for your boat, a headlamp, etc.), it’s an awesome summer activity, especially in the dark-sky Adirondacks! The number of stars you can see on a clear night is just incredible!

I even had a chance this weekend to catch up on some reading! I’m just about finished with “Into the Water” by Paula Hawkins - #3 on my Summer Reading List

I am only 60 pages from the end, and I’m feeling much more captivated than I was in the beginning. The story has been intense from the start, but it really got moving toward the middle of the book. I’m enjoying the many twists and turns!

If you’ve been reading along with me, or you would like to start now and catch up, I have created a list of discussion questions for you to consider while you read.

Next Monday, 7/31, I will share my thoughts on the book and answer all of these questions in the comments section below. I’d really like to see your thoughts and answers there, too! Now, let’s get this conversation rolling!

Book Club Discussion: "Into the Water" by Paula Hawkins

  1. This book is written from the perspective of several different characters. How did this structure affect your reading experience?
  2. What did you think of the author’s ability to maintain the mystery surrounding the story? Were you able to guess the ending? What clues tipped you off? Were there any red herrings that set you off on the wrong path?
  3. Were there any passages that really struck you? What was it that made them stand out to you?
  4. Consider Nel’s mission to share the stories of the people of Beckford with the world. Was she right or wrong to do so? Why do you feel this way?
  5. Did you identify with any particular character in this book? What made them relatable to you?
  6. This book is heavily focused on the women of Beckford. Do these women share any similarities? What effect did these similarities have on the women and the people around them?
  7. What were your overall thoughts about this book? If you were the author, would you change anything about the story?
  8. Rate this book! How many coffee cups would you give it on a scale of 1-5, with 1 cup being the worst and 5 cups being the best?

So there you have it. I hope you’re enjoying the book so far and that I’ve given you some thoughtful ideas to consider. I look forward to discussing these questions, as well as any others that you might have, right here next week.

What were your thoughts about "Into the Water"? Did you love it? Hate it? Do you have any other questions or comments to include in the discussion? Feel free to share them below. I can’t wait to hear from you!
