Operation Secret Bouncy Castle
As I’ve said before, Josh and I really wanted our wedding to be a reflection of us as a couple. We are both young at heart, and we try to stay pretty down to earth. It was also important to us that our friends and family were able to have a great time! After all, they would be taking time out of their busy lives to spend the day celebrating with us. It was the least we could do to provide them with some entertainment.
That’s why when I was scrolling through the rental options at Upstate Tents and Events (which is where we rented our tent, furniture, dance floor, and sound system from) and saw that they offered a bouncy castle rental...I knew that it must be done! I told Josh about it and he thought it was a great idea. We told our Maid of Honor and Best Man, and they were totally on board. I told my mom, and she offered to cover the cost for the rental! Everyone we ran it by loved the idea, and so, operation secret bouncy castle was a go!
As we placed the order, I envisioned Josh and I bouncing around in our fairy-tale castle, all dressed up in our fancy wedding clothes. I pictured us getting sweaty and messy, and I saw us laughing hysterically with our friends as we, a bunch of “adults”, behaved like free-spirited little children. I smiled to myself and got super amped up about this ridiculous, last minute decision of ours.
The day before our wedding, we spent the entire day setting up our big, white tent. We set up tables, chairs, tablecloths, and centerpieces. With a lot of help from friends and family, we strung lights, hung decorations, and put together flower arrangements and centerpieces. We worked until our bodies were sore, and we were exhausted. After most of our helpers, aside from Katherine and Addison, had gone to get some rest, Josh and I spent a few minutes taking in the final results of our hard work. Everything we had spent the last year working on was finally coming together, and it looked wonderful.
Before we left, we decided to test out the sound system that we had set up. We connected my phone to the (super awesome) bluetooth speakers, and played our first dance song. Then, Josh swept me onto the big, empty dance floor, while Addison did the same to Katherine. The four of us danced around and talked under the twinkling lights until one of us decided, “Hey! We should make sure the bouncy castle is in working order...It’s quiet enough, right?” And that is how the four of us ended up jumping around in the bouncy castle at midnight on the eve of my wedding.
We laughed, shrieked, and bounced around for a few minutes until we all collapsed onto the dirty, vinyl floor of the castle. As we quieted down, we gazed up at the vibrant, bright moon and the sparkling stars and talked. I don’t think I had ever been so content. That was when I knew that renting this silly, childish bouncy house was an excellent decision.
The next day, after the reception was in full swing, our photographer moved us and our bridal party to the bouncy castle for a photo shoot! It was during this time that I was reminded, once again, that this spur of the moment idea of mine was a total home run. We were all laughing, and screaming, and having such an amazing time that a crowd of people from the reception came over to watch us. Everyone was laughing so hard at our silly antics and gathering around to take photos. Just as I'd hoped, Operation Secret Bouncy Castle was a hit.
Some of my favorite images from the wedding are from this hilarious spectacle. It is apparent in all of our faces just how much joy was coursing through us at the time. It’s not often that, as adults, we get to really let loose and just be crazy. On Josh's and my wedding day, we did just that.
When the “adults” were finished up with their craziness, the kids at the wedding got a chance to enjoy the bouncy castle, too. I was pleased to see them having as good a time as us “grown-ups".
Best. Idea. Ever.
